As the upstart Sport Fishing Championship (SFC) readies for its second season, the offshore fishing league created a kickoff event that may cement an annual place in the sports ecosystem.
SFC's The Catch will pair NFL superstars with SFC's top anglers, competing off the shores of Miami. The competition will be broadcast live on CBS during sports prime time, a first for the network.
Why football and fishing? Well, the NFL is the most popular sports league in North America. And fishing has more participants than golf and tennis combined. The pop culture buzz of NFL superstars will give an offseason jolt to the fishing community.
And the event benefits the Coast Guard Foundation, so everyone wins.
This was a calculated investment by the SFC that already is paying big dividends.
